2020 Volkswagen Golf GTD teased
The eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf GTD has been teased ahead of its formal debut at the 2020 Geneva motor show in March.
While the seventh-generation GTD was never sold in Australia, the new model should offer clues to the styling of the Mk8 GTI.
Compared to the non-performance variants of the next-generation Golf, the GTD has a revised lower air intake area with a honeycomb grille and a chequered flag-style lights at each corner, which are more symmetrical than the set used on the Renault Megane RS.

The bar connecting the headlight clusters with the VW badge also seems to be illuminated.
Under the bonnet the new GTD is said to have the "cleanest turbo diesel injection (TDI) engine ever to be installed in a Golf".
With two SCR catalytic converters, each with its own AdBlue injector, Volkswagen claims it has "one of the cleanest combustion engines in the world".
In addition to reducing emissions of both oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and CO2, the new GTD is also said to have improved performance, but numbers have yet to be revealed.
The outgoing GTD was powered by a 135kW/380Nm 2.0-litre turbo-diesel. On the one hand its power output paled in comparison to the 169kW GTI, and its 0-100km/h time of 7.5 seconds was leisurely compared to the GTI's 6.4 seconds.
On the other, it did have the same amount of torque as the Golf R and a claimed fuel economy rating of around 4.5L/100km. It was also available in Europe in both hatch and wagon body styles.
