Toyota confirms faster, stiffer Supra for Australia

The much-talked-about Supra will be given a 35kW boost and revised suspension from later this year.

Toyota Australia has confirmed the Supra is getting a power boost and tweaked suspension "towards the end of 2020".

The existing BMW-sourced turbocharged inline-six engine carries over, but peak power jumps from 250kW to 285kW – peak torque remains unchanged at 500Nm.

Under the skin, Toyota says the power upgrades will be paired with a reworked suspension and an under-bonnet stiffening brace designed to deliver "more track focused handling".

Toyota has yet to confirm pricing for the updated Supra, but says "there will likely be an increase linked to the updates" when they take effect later this year.

The Supra range currently kicks off at $84,900 before on-road costs for the base GT, and jumps to $94,900 before on-roads for the range-topping GTS.

As of the end of January 2020, Toyota Australia had sold 345 examples of the new Supra.

An additional batch of cars has been secured for Australia, and will be sold through dealers – not just online, as was the case with the initial allocation.

However the cars coming to dealers early this year don't have the upgraded engine, nor the tweaked suspension. Dealers are currently accepting expressions of interest for the updated car, with more details about pricing and timing to be revealed closer to its arrival in Australia.
