2021 Volkswagen ID.4 spied

Company's first electric crossover looks production ready despite the Opel disguise.

The Volkswagen ID.4 has been spied during winter testing in upper reaches of Europe.

Originally scheduled to make its in-the-flesh debut at this week's Chicago motor show, its launch has reportedly been pushed back until the New York show in April.

The prototype pictured here has around the same amount of camouflage as an earlier car photographed at the back end of 2019, but this car's white paint makes it far easier to distinguish the genuine styling elements from the tricky Opel Grandland X disguise.

The ID.4 will be the first production crossover based on the Volkswagen Group's MEB EV platform, and should share a lot in common with the available-in-Europe ID.3 hatch.

Like the ID.3, the ID.4 has a more organic design than petrol and diesel vehicles in Volkswagen's range, including a flowing shoulder line and flush-fitting lift-up door handles.

Despite featuring stickers of the Opel's grille and lower air intakes, the ID.4 looks to be a grille-less affair with just a small air intake at the bottom of the front bumper.

It's unclear what drivetrain options will be available on the ID.4 when it launches, but the ID.Crozz concept it's based on had two electric motors making a total of 225kW, and an 83kWh battery good for a range estimate of 500km using the generous NEDC standard.

There are also rumours the company will launch hot GTX and scalding R versions of the ID.4.

Volkswagen Australia is on the record stating the ID.4 will arrive in local showrooms before the ID.3, which is tentatively scheduled to lob Down Under in 2022.
