2021 Hyundai ’45’ spied

The company's Pony-inspired EV seems to be heading into production in the near future.

A pre-production version of the Hyundai 45 concept has been spied during cold weather testing in northern Europe.

Most of the car's styling details are hidden from view, but the prototype has the same boxy and simple silhouette as the 2019 45 concept. Hyundai has taken some of the edges off the concept's highly angular form, which can be seen at the bottom of this article.

While the prototype is thoroughly covered, we can see the production version will have framed door windows instead of the concept's frameless glass.

One element of the concept will be carried through to production: the plastic wheel arch protectors. Although they're not fitted to this car, the holders are clearly visible at both ends.

We're not sure what will power the 45, but given the car's quick turnaround, it's likely the 45 shares components with existing vehicles.

An electric powertrain shared with the Kona Electric might be on the cards. The crossover EV is available with choice of 100kW/395Nm or 150kW/395Nm motors overseas, with only the latter offered in Australia.

It's unclear if the 45 name will carry through to the final vehicle. The 2019 concept was created to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Pony Coupe Concept, which was unveiled in 1974.

A year later the Pony sedan started trundling down the line as the company's first independently developed car. Hyundai, at the time, was producing Ford Cortinas under licence.
