2020 Aston Martin Vantage Roadster detailed, here later this year

The drop-top Vantage has finally been outed in full, with power from the coupe's 4.0-litre V8 engine and a $315,000 price before on-road costs.

Aston Martin has detailed the 2020 Vantage Roadster, complete with the world's fastest electrically-operated roof.

That's right, the Vantage will go from zero to open-topped in just seven seconds at speeds up to 50km/h – just under twice as long as it takes to go from zero to 100km/h, according to Aston Martin.

Along with its speedy operation, the Vantage Roadster's roof has been designed with weight in mind. Aston says the drop-top is just 60kg heavier than the coupe, thanks to a "new, lighter z-fold mechanism".

Roof aside, power in the Vantage Roadster comes from a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 sourced from Mercedes-AMG. It pumps out 385kW and 685Nm, put to the rear wheels through an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.

The 100km/h sprint is dispatched in under four seconds, and flat out you'll be doing 305km/h.

Under the skin, Aston Martin says the Roadster "retains the strong dynamic ability and sporting character achieved in the Coupe with no compromise to feel or refinement".

With the same rear differential as the coupe, dynamic changes to the Roadster include new rear dampers, revised adaptive damping software, and a new ESP tune.

Boot space is down on the coupe, but Aston Martin says there's space for 200L of stuff  – enough to house a set of golf clubs – thanks to the roof's compact design.

"Open-top Aston Martins are always firm favourites with our customers, so it’s very exciting to introduce the Vantage Roadster," said Aston Martin president and CEO Andy Palmer.

"For many, driving with the roof down is the true definition of the sports car experience as it truly brings your senses to life. Vantage has always delivered the purest of thrills, but in Roadster form that adrenaline rush is set to go to the next level."

Australia

The Vantage will touch down in Australia during the third quarter of 2020, with pricing set to start at $315,000 before on-road costs.
