Ford v Ferrari wins two Academy Awards

The motorsport biopic has excited audiences and critics alike at the 2020 Academy Awards.

Ford v Ferrari has taken home two Oscars at the 92nd Academy Awards, but not for acting or accuracy.

The film, which took some liberties with the truth and timeline in telling the story of the famous battle between Ford and Ferrari at Le Mans in the 1960s, instead won awards for 'Film Editing' and 'Sound Editing' at the 2020 Academy Awards.

The biopic centres on car builder Carroll Shelby (played by Matt Damon) and racing driver Ken Miles (played by Christian Bale), who were tasked by Henry Ford II to build the famous Ford GT40 and beat Ferrari at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race.

The award wins mark Ford vs Ferrari as only the second motorsport-focused film in history to take home an Oscar, joining Grand Prix (1966) which won Best Sound Effects, Best Film Editing and Best Sound at the 1967 Academy Awards.

Ford v Ferrari also surpasses Rush (2013) and Days of Thunder (1990), which were  nominated for an Oscar but didn’t take the prize.

The film has been praised by critics and audiences alike, receiving a score of 8.2/10 on IMDB and a 92 per cent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but has been criticised by some hard-core motoring historians for its inaccuracies and storytelling.

“The rot in [the Ford Motor Company] was much deeper than the film conveys,” Will Jeakle of Forbes writes.

“The reality was that if Ford hadn’t had a hit like the Mustang in the mid-60s, and proven that the car could take on speed demons like Ferrari, Ford would have likely ceased to exist as an independent company.”

Ford v Ferrari was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Sound Mixing, but lost out to Parasite and 1917 respectively.
