2020 Volkswagen California Beach confirmed for Australia

The updated Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 range will touch down in Australia during the third quarter of 2020, spearheaded by the California camper.

Full details about the T6.1 Transporter range are yet to be revealed, but thus far we know the updated van will pack significantly more technology than its predecessor.

Autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and crosswind assist will all be available when the new model touches down in the third quarter.

The new T6.1 Transporter range will also debut a new powertrain for Australia, combining the existing TDI 340 turbo-diesel engine and seven-speed automatic with all-wheel drive.

Under the skin, the T6.1 gets electro-mechanical power steering in place of the outgoing model's hydraulic setup, opening the door for lane-keeping assist and parking assist.

Inside, the updated Transporter is now available with a 10.25-inch digital instrument binnacle and a choice of 8.0- or 9.2-inch touchscreen, complete with wireless Apple CarPlay.

Three trims of California are offered abroad, but Australia will get the 'Beach'. A pop-out mini kitchen is standard, along with a manually-operated pop-top.

Overseas the Beach is available with a choice of four or five seats, although Volkswagen hasn't confirmed whether that option will be offered locally.

"With the introduction of the T6.1 California Beach, we are finally answering fan and customer demand for a factory-backed, turn-key weekender – we’re ecstatic to be bringing the Kombi Van back to Oz,” said Ryan Davies, head of commercial vehicles at Volkswagen Australia.
