2021 Genesis G80 luxury sedan testing in Australia

The next generation of Genesis’ G80 limousine has been caught on camera during local testing ahead of showroom arrivals next year.

Hyundai’s luxury division Genesis is putting the finishing touches on the next model due to fill-out its revamped line-up.

The new generation Genesis G80 limousine has been caught on camera while testing in Sydney.

UPDATE, MARCH 5: The new G80 has now been unveiled. Story here.

While the camouflage hides key design details, the new Genesis G80 is expected to have a sleeker design than the current model and adopt some of the styling themes from the GV80 luxury SUV unveiled last month.

The new Genesis G80 sedan will be the third all-new model to be released locally – behind the G70 mid-size performance sedan and the upcoming GV80 SUV – following the establishment last year of Genesis as a standalone brand in Australia, and will likely arrive as the dealer network starts its expansion phase.

At the moment there is only one Genesis dealer, in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, but more are planned for Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Genesis is yet to confirm timing of the arrival of the G80 flagship, however given the vehicle appears to be in the late stages of development, CarAdvice expects it will arrive in Australian showrooms in the first half of 2021.

Power is likely to come from the twin turbo 3.3-litre V6 and eight-speed auto from the mid-size G70 – a powertrain that is also used on the G90 limousine (pictured further below) in the US – however Genesis is yet to confirm what is under the bonnet.

It is also unclear if the more fuel-efficient turbo 2.0-litre petrol four-cylinder (also from the G70) might be made available at some stage through the model’s lifecycle to appeal to the hire car market.

The current Genesis G80 is a popular choice among limousine drivers and, given that the vehicles spend most of their time stuck in city traffic, a four-cylinder option could help trim their fuel bill.

The non-turbo V6 in the current G80 has an output of 232kW/397Nm whereas the turbo four-cylinder has 179kW/353Nm, however it has more power at lower revs which is better suited to commuter driving.

Other key changes expected to come with the completely new Genesis G80 is the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a super large widescreen for the infotainment system.

The current-generation G80 misses out on smartphone mirroring because its infotainment system was developed before the rollout of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The arrival of the new G80 sedan and GV80 SUV is expected to give the Genesis brand the shot in the arm it needs to launch properly in Australia.

Just 103 Genesis cars were reported as sold in Australia last year, but the company expects to ramp up quickly once it starts to round out its model line-up.
