2021 Volkswagen ‘T7’ Multivan/Caravelle spied

Next-generation model will stand out thanks to its more steeply angled windscreen and extra front window.

The next-generation Volkswagen Multivan people mover has been spied during cold weather testing in Sweden.

Compared to today's Multivan and Caravelle (pictured at the bottom of this article), the new model has a longer front overhang.

While this was obvious in earlier development mules, which used body panels from the current T6.1 van, in production this will be much less pronounced as the dashboard and front passengers have been moved further back.

The addition of a fixed front quarter window and steeper windscreen rake give the new T7 models a sportier look. The silhouette, though, is still rectangular and boxy to maximise passenger and cargo space.

The sliding doors should ensure easy ingress and egress, but unlike some car-based people movers, such as the Chrysler Pacifica or the American Honda Odyssey, no effort has been made to hide the doors' running tracks.

At the rear, there are slim tail-light units stretching into the tailgate. We suspect these will might be unique to the Caravelle and Multivan, with vertical lights likely for the cargo-focussed Transporter models.

Under the skin, the new T7 van and people mover range is said to be based on the MQB component matrix which, in various forms, is used on everything in the Volkswagen Group from the Polo hatch to the Arteon 'coupe'.

This means the T7 range can be offered, at least in Europe, with an array of more eco-friendly powertrains, including 48V mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrains.

It should also see the new T7 models offered with the company's latest digital instrumentation and infotainment systems, as well as the latest active safety technology.

When the T7 range is launched, it will likely see the demise of the Volkswagen Sharan and Seat Alhambra people movers sold in Europe, both of which made their debuts in 2011 and are based on the previous-generation Volkswagen Passat.
