2020 Jeep Gladiator Mojave revealed

It's a desert-dashing Raptor Rival with specialist hi-po suspension

Jeep has revealed a new iteration of its Gladiator ute in the USA, named after the Mojave desert and targeted at high-performance 4WDs like Ford’s F-150 Raptor.

Like other factory-fettled 4X4 utes, the majority of modification to this new 2020 Jeep Gladiator Mojave is centred around specialist suspension.

The Mojave features a new Fox-sourced suspension setup, tailored to improve the Gladiator’s high-speed off-road capability. The shocks are big: 2.5 inches in diameter, with remote fluid reservoirs, and using internal bypassing for improved high-speed performance.

Jeep has also employed hydraulic bump stops for the Gladiator Mojave, which further improves its ability to handle high-impact suspension movements like jumps and fast bumps. Think of them almost like an additional shock absorber to reduce bottoming out and maintaining control.

To help accommodate all of this extra hardware (and improve stability), the Gladiator Mojave’s wheel track has been widened by 12.7mm.

Tyres are the same as the Gladiator Rubicon: Falken Wildpeak ATs on a new-design 17-inch wheel. We expect mud-terrain tyres will be a factory option.

To aid in the durability stakes, axle tubes have a thicker wall (10mm, up from 7mm), and the front suspension has been lifted 25mm for some additional travel.

Jeep reckons the suspension is tuned with a sportier bent, coupled with a 2.7:1 transfer case. This isn’t as low as the 4:1 Rubicon transfer case, but leaves it more suited to desert running rather than rock crawling.

Still using lower-ratio differential gearing, the Gladiator Mojave has impressive crawl ratios of 57.3:1 for the six-speed manual gearbox and 52.6:1 with the eight-speed automatic gearbox.

One interesting point is that the Gladiator Mojave will have the ability to run the locking rear differential in high range: a first for Jeep and suitable for high-speed off-roading. This will be coupled high-speed centric driving modes, another unique element for this model.

The Gladiator Mojave gets special details and embroidery on the inside, and ‘Desert Rated’ badges on the outside, along with ‘MOJAVE’ emblazoned down each side of the bonnet.

Will the Jeep Gladiator Mojave come to Australia?

We reached out to Jeep Australia for comment on whether we can expect Mojave to be part of the Gladiator range in Australia. They were non-committal, neither ruling in or out the specialist iteration.

We were also told to stay tuned, with further announcements about the Gladiator's Australia line-up and availability coming soon.
