2020 Audi SQ8 pricing and specs: 900Nm hero here in April

While fans of true flagships wait for the RSQ8's arrival later this year, there's a new 'midweight' champ in the Q8 line-up.

The powered-up 2020 Audi SQ8 TDI, revealed in June last year, is readying its roll into Australia with pricing and details revealed today.

Joining the petrol Q8 55TFSI and diesel 50TDI that launched here last year, the diesel-driven 2020 SQ8 will arrive in April as the big SUV's flagship model – until the hero RSQ8 arrives in the third quarter.

Kicking off from $165,500 before on-road costs, the SQ8 is driven by a twin-turbo V8 diesel engine, matched to a 48V 'mild hybrid' system (which both replaces the alternator and starter motor, and gives the engine a small boost under heavy acceleration and from a standing start).

Power and torque are listed at 320kW and 900Nm, the latter from 1250-3250rpm. By comparison, the 3.0-litre petrol 55TFSI and diesel 50TDI models offer 250kW/500Nm and 210kW/620Nm respectively.

The SQ8's big V8 is matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive, adding up to a claimed 0-100km/h time of 4.8 seconds. Fuel consumption is rated at 7.8L/100km.

Audi's newest performance SUV also benefits from all-wheel steering, adaptive air suspension and electromechanical active roll stabilisation – also powered through the 48V system.

Exterior highlights includes Audi Sport 'S' body styling (front and rear bumpers, grille, side sills and tailgate spoiler), 22-inch alloy wheels, Matrix LED headlights with dynamic rear indicators, red brake callipers, adaptive air suspension sport, aluminium-look mirrors, tinted windows, power-assisted door closure and metallic paint.

Moving into the cabin, standard kit includes sports seats, diamond-patterned 'Valcona' leather trim throughout, aluminium highlights, black cloth headliner, a three-spoke steering wheel in the popular flat-bottomed style, four-zone climate control, ambient lighting, and glass-surfaced black control buttons with haptic feedback.

Tech features out of the box include 10.1- and 8.6-inch touch displays in the centre console, matched to Audi's Virtual Cockpit instrument display behind the steering wheel. Wired Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay are also standard.

As with the regular Q8, the SQ8's boot measures 605 litres with the rear seats up and in their most rearward position, comparing to 770 litres in the Q7.

Drop the 40:20:40 rear seats, and space grows to a fairly cavernous 1755 litres.
