2020 Ford GT has more power, exposed carbon-fibre finish

The updated Ford GT supercar made its debut overnight at the 2020 Chicago motor show.

The GT's 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 engine now has gallery-cooled pistons, higher-energy ignition coils, larger intercoolers, new buttress air ducts, and revised calibration settings.

As a result the V6 now has a broader torque band and an extra 10kW to play with, increasing total output to 492kW.

An Akrapovic titanium exhaust is now standard, and is said to give the car a "deeply resonant, unmistakable sound", as well as shave around four kilograms off the car's weight.

Ford has also made changes to the suspension setup to improve handling and body control "particularly for those high-speed transient sections of closed-course circuits".

The GT range now includes a Liquid Carbon option which has a paint-free exterior and a special clear coat to show off the car's carbon-fibre body.

Carbon-fibre wheels are standard on Liquid Carbon models, while titanium lug nuts, dual or single centre stripes, painted mirror caps, and six-point racing harness anchors are available.

For the 2020 model, Ford has also updated the Gulf Racing heritage livery. In a callback to the 1968 and 1969 Le Mans-winning GT40 models, it now features a black pinstripe to divide the blue and orange segments.

The optional number is now 6 instead of 9, and carbon-fibre wheels are available for this first time with this heritage package.
