Skoda posts strong January ahead of ‘biggest ever product year’

Skoda has enjoyed a strong start to 2020, as it prepares to launch a raft of new and updated models.

Despite a decline of 12.5 per cent in reported sales for January, the Czech brand grew its sales more than 30 per cent on the back of a strong month for the Octavia sedan and wagon.

Sales of the Honda Civic rival jumped more than 120 per cent, while the compact Rapid hatchback doubled its tally from January 2019.

The compact Karoq SUV and seven-seat Kodiaq also grew their sales.

The strong start comes ahead of a big year for Skoda, which has set its sights on doubling sales by 2023.

The supply issues that once plagued the brand appear to be under control at the moment, and its SUV line-up will be fully realised by the middle of 2020.

The current range will be joined by the Kodiaq RS in March, while the Karoq is being 'relaunched' with a new, less-efficient engine 110TSI engine and a fresh 140TSI Sportline range-topper.

A limited-run Superb Scout – the first Skoda to be sold with a petrol particulate filter in Australia – will be here early in the second quarter of 2020 as well.

The new Scala hatchback will arrive in June, followed by the Kamiq compact SUV coming to tackle the Mazda CX-3 and Hyundai Venue.

“For 2020 Skoda finally has in place a full range of SUVs, starting with the compact Kamiq, through a dual Karoq range and a Kodiaq with a range topping RS performance variant,” said Skoda Australia managing director Michael Irmer.

“Fabia, Octavia and Superb remain range pillars, but a full SUV range will bring our distinctive brand to the attention of more buyers than at any time since we arrived in 2007."

Skoda last year topped 7000 sales for the first time.
