2020 Aston Martin DBX: $357,000 SUV ‘sold out’ in Australia

Aston Martin's first-ever SUV is already "sold out" in Australia and New Zealand, as the company pushes head office for more cars to match stronger-than-expected demand.

Unveiled in November, the new DBX has only been shown to a small group of current and prospective Aston Martin owners in Australia – and the order books are already full.

"It's been a roaring success," said Patrick Nilsson, Aston Martin regional director for Asia Pacific. "It's blown us out of the water as to how well it's been received."

"[Supply] is one of the headaches now, because [in] Australia ... [the DBX is] sold out, done," he said.

Nilsson wouldn't be drawn on how long the car is sold out, but says he's working to strengthen local supply. Just 5000 examples will be built globally every year, partly to maintain exclusivity and partly because that is currently a hard limit on factory capacity.

Aston Martin has previously told Drive it expects to sell around 55 examples annually in Australia, but those numbers might need a re-think.

"One of my tasks now is to make sure we get more allocation ... it's hard, but it's not as hard as problems are sometimes," Nilsson said.

Strong demand for the DBX has the potential to significantly boost Aston Martin's sales, which hit 129 (down 22.8 per cent) in 2019.

The car has attracted plenty of interest from existing Aston Martin owners – Nilsson says 73 per cent of Aston Martin owners already have an SUV in the garage, offering a solid base of prospective customers – but it's also drawing in buyers new to the brand.

"In Asia Pacific almost 60 per cent of the orders we've taken are from conquest – so new to brand. That is way beyond my expectations," he said.

"We're totally attracting new-to-brand customers."

Pricing for the DBX will start at $357,000 before on-road costs when it arrives in Australia, pitching it between the Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus.

Power comes from a 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 engine outputting 405kW and 700Nm, put to all four wheels through a nine-speed torque converter automatic.

The 100km/h sprint is dispatched in 4.5 seconds, and fuel economy is pegged at 14.3L/100km on the WLTP test cycle.

Inside, the DBX gets a full-length panoramic glass roof and frameless doors, along with separate inboard armrests, buttons and switches that fall to hand comfortably, and an Alcantara headlining trim option that Aston claims to be an industry first.

Features in the cabin include a 10.25-inch main dash display, matched to a 12.3-inch instrument screen behind the steering wheel. Apple CarPlay is standard, along with a 360-degree camera.
