Fiat Chrysler’s Google-based Uconnect 5 infotainment: Over-the-air updates, wireless Android/Apple connection

Fiat Chrysler (FCA) has revealed the design and features of its new Uconnect 5 infotainment system. As revealed last year, Uconnect 5 is based on the Android mobile operating system.

The underlying hardware now includes 6GB of memory, up to 64GB of flash storage, and a faster processor said to make the whole system five times faster than today's iteration.

The new infotainment system is capable of hosting four displays throughout the car, including screens with up to 15 million pixels, which is almost enough for an 8K TV.

Over-the-air software updates means a trip to the dealership is no longer needed for security fixes and feature upgrades.

When it becomes available in FCA vehicles (Fiat, Chrysler, Alfa Romeo, Jeep, Ram, Maserati, Dodge, Lancia), Uconnect 5 will be offered in both horizontal and vertical orientations, and in sizes up to 12.3 inches in diameter.

In addition to wireless connectivity for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as two simultaneous Bluetooth connections, Uconnect 5 also supports Amazon's Alexa digital assistant allowing occupants to control home smart devices remotely.

There's also a new built-in voice recognition system, which can process natural language commands and can be activated by a brand-specific key phrase, for example "Hey Chrysler".

TomTom satellite navigation will be available on some models, and it includes background over-the-air map updates and charging station locations for electric and plug-in hybrid models.

While the latest Uconnect system has an updated interface, the new system now has a card-based interface, a customisable home screen and support for up to five different user profiles.

A 4G LTE hotspot is available, and the new Uconnect Market e-commerce platform allows passengers to make restaurant reservations, order food and securely pay for petrol all from the touchscreen.

It's not known when FCA will be equipping cars with the new Uconnect 5 system or which vehicle lines will be first to receive the infotainment units.
