2020 Goodwood Festival of Speed celebrates motorsport greats

This year's FoS pays tribute to motorsport drivers, teams, and manufacturers

The theme for the 2020 Goodwood Festival of Speed has been announced, putting a focus on motorsport greats.

Stepping away from traditional manufacturer-focused events, Goodwood has named this year’s theme “The Maestros – Motorsport's Great All-Rounders”.

The theme celebrates not only drivers and riders on two and four wheels, but teams and manufacturers such as Ferrari, Porsche, Lotus, Mercedes-Benz, McLaren, Ford, Williams, Penske, and Ganassi.

The spotlight will be turned to some of racing's greatest ever drivers, including Jacky Ickx, who won Le Mans six times and eight Formula 1 grands prix, along with wins at Can-Am, World Endurance, European Touring Cars, Formula 2 and more.

Tributes to those who have passed, include John Surtees – the only person to win a championship on two wheels and four – and Jim Clark, who won championships in the British Saloon Car Championship, Indy 500, and two F1 titles, will also feature.

Another great is Sir Stirling Moss, known as one of the greatest drivers never to win a world F1 championship. He won 212 of the 529 races he entered over seven years.

Graham Hill is famous for being the only driver to take the ’triple crown’, winning the Monaco Grand Prix, Indy 500 and Le Mans 24 Hours in the ’60s and ‘70s.

Finally, focus will be put on Dan Gurney, who won races in F1, NASCAR, Trans-Am, and Can-Am. Perhaps more significantly, he's known for being the first person to spray champagne on the podium, after his 24 Hour Le Mans win in 1967...

“The Duke of Richmond has built up a monument based on respect and with that special touch that we probably call soul”, says Jacky Ickx.

“Without doubt, it’s touching to have been invited to such a celebration. Years ago, we were freelance in a way: we could race everywhere, in different categories – it wasn’t a narrow path.

“The driver, however good his talent is, only represents the know-how of the entire team. If you receive a good car, as I have often, it is easy to win. My results and my part in the Festival of Speed are recognising that most of the work was done by people you never see, and I am sure that the event will be another fantastic occasion with a special atmosphere.”

The Goodwood Festival of Speed runs between July 9 to 12, with tickets on sale now.
