2020 Mazda CX-30 scores five stars in ANCAP testing

Mazda's important CX-30 SUV has achieved five stars in ANCAP testing, returning the highest score for Adult Occupant Protection in the road safety body's history.

The high-riding CX-30, which rivals the Kia Seltos, scored 99 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection. It also returned an impressive 88 per cent for Child Occupant Protection, and 80 per cent for Vulnerable Road User Protection.

"[The CX-30] performed exceptionally well across the range of destructive crash tests including the full width, side impact, oblique pole and whiplash tests. Only minor reductions were seen for potential injury risk to the lower legs in the frontal offset test," said James Goodwin, ANCAP chief executive.

"The physical protection offered to child occupants was also strong, and our assessment showed a range of common child restraints could be safely accommodated."

Pricing for the CX-30 will start at $29,990 before on-road costs, and run to $43,490 before on-roads for a top-spec model with a 2.5-litre petrol engine.

Not to be confused with the CX-3, the CX-30 takes the bones of the latest 3 hatchback and packs them into a high-riding SUV.

It's 120mm longer and 30mm wider than the Mazda 2-based CX-3 SUV, and has an 85mm longer wheelbase – but both cars have the same roof height.

It's a very close dimensional match for the Kia Seltos, and Mazda says it fills a gap for people who want something larger than a CX-3, but don't want to stretch to the CX-5. Just don't call it a CX-4.
