2020 Audi Q3 Sportback pricing and specs

Audi will follow up the October launch of its new-generation Q3 compact SUV with the Australian debut of its sibling, the 2020 Audi Q3 Sportback, in March.

The first of its name, the 2020 Q3 Sportback will mirror the launch program of the regular Q3, arriving initially with one drivetrain package and two trim options.

Hopping into the Q3 Sportback will start from $49,900 before on-road costs, making the regular Q3 a $3500 more affordable proposition.

But if you prefer the style of the Sportback, the coupe-shaped SUV will land in 35 TFSI S Line and 35 TFSI Launch Edition grades, each driven (as the '35 TFSI' denotes) by a 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine producing 110kW and 250Nm.

That engine is matched exclusively to a six-speed S tronic automatic transmission and a front-wheel drive arrangement.

Audi claims the Q3 Sportback 35 TFSI models are good for fuel consumption figures of 7.3L/100km, with CO2 emissions rated at 167g/km.

The 0-100km/h sprint is more of a jog in this entry-level configuration, listed at 9.3 seconds.

For those desiring a little more 'oomph', the Q3 Sportback 40 TFSI will arrive around April or May.

In that specification, there's a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine delivering 132kW and 320Nm, matched to a seven-speed S tronic auto and all-wheel drive.

Although not confirmed locally yet, the 40 TFSI model should hit 100km/h in about 7.4 seconds. Fuel consumption, equipment and pricing are likewise still to be confirmed.

(There's also a hotter-again 45 TFSI model overseas, offering 169kW/350Nm and a 6.5-second run to 100km/h. Some diesels, too. No word on local plans for any of those.)

The Q3 Sportback is a little longer and lower than its regular stablemate, but Audi touts identical storage figures despite the tapered roofline at 530 litres with the back seats upright. Drop those pews (which can also slide and split-fold 40:20:40) and space grows to 1400 litres.

Equipment with the Q3 S line includes 19-inch alloy wheels, Audi Drive Select driving modes, Virtual Cockpit (10.25-inch digital driver display), a 10.1-inch main screen, traditional USB-A and new USB-C connection points, wireless phone charging, digital radio and Apple CarPlay.

There's also 'leather-appointed' interior trim, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting and keyless entry.

Safety technology includes six airbags, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with cyclist and pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane change warning, rear cross-traffic assist, tyre pressure monitors, and hill descent control, as well as a comprehensive suite of parking sensors and rear view camera.

A 5-star ANCAP safety rating has been awarded to the Q3 Sportback.

The Launch Edition adds metallic paint, privacy glass, black exterior garnishes, folding/heated exterior mirrors, high-output Audi sound system, auto dimming interior mirror, colour interior lighting package, heated front seats with electric adjustment and lumbar support, and a 360-degree parking camera, as well as adaptive cruise assist, active lane assist and emergency assist.

Need more?

But wait... there's more. If even the 40 TFSI doesn't meet your thirst for power, and in view of the 45 TFSI probably sitting out the trip to Australia, there's the 294kW/480Nm RS Q3 twins. They'll be here in the second quarter. Pricing and specs, of course, are still to be confirmed.
