Maserati teases 2021 GranTurismo electric vehicle

The GranTurismo and GranCabrio are about to make a grand return with an all-new, battery-electric powertrain.

Italian sports cars and grand tourers are renowned for, among other things, the amazing sounds they make. Maserati doesn’t want its upcoming electric GranTurismo and GranCabrio to be exceptions.

The company has teased its upcoming battery-electric grand tourer range, assuring it’ll have a “distinctive signature sound” that’s “unique and unmistakable”.

It’s certainly a very different sound to that of the model Maserati teased in November, which was distinctly petrol-powered.

That teaser was for Maserati’s upcoming sports car, set to launch this year.

According to the most recent five-year plan by Maserati's parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, released last year, the sports car will be followed by a convertible variant in 2021.

The new GranTurismo will launch in 2021, followed by the GranCabrio in 2022.

Previous reports have indicated the battery-electric powertrain will come with three electric motors, all-wheel-drive, torque vectoring and an 800V electrical system.

It’ll also be available in the upcoming sports car, which uses an aluminium spaceframe and is expected to be inspired by the 2014 Alfieri concept (above).

The electric sports car should do the 0-100km/h dash in around two seconds.

Expect the undoubtedly larger and heavier Gran models to be slightly slower.

Maserati’s upcoming coupe and convertible ranges won’t be the only ones adopting battery-electric power, with a new, sub-Levante SUV launching with an electric powertrain in 2021.

Battery-electric variants of the redesigned Quattroporte and Levante will arrive in 2022 and 2023, respectively, while a plug-in hybrid powertrain is expected to be offered across much of the Maserati range. The first plug-in Maserati, the Ghibli, will arrive this year.

The company has promised all new products will receive Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities.

The new Gran models will be a significant technological leap over the outgoing models, which were retired last year.

Though they received a new infotainment system for 2018, they still lacked features like adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking.
