Ferrari museum celebrates 70-years of Le Mans victories

The Prancing Horse has brought some of its most famous LeMans 24-Hour cars out of mothballs for a very special display.

If you couldn’t get enough of the movie, Ford vs Ferrari, then the Ferrari Museum in Maranello has just opened a new exhibition that will feed your Le Mans fix. Ferrari at 24 Heures du Mans looks at the Italian brand’s 36 triumphs over 70 years of racing at the famous Le Mans.

Featuring many record-breaking cars, it includes a similar 166 MM Barchetta Touring (below) that Luigi Chinetti and Lord Selsdon took first place in for Ferrari’s debut on 26 June 1949. The two Ferrari drivers were up against some tough competition, with more professional drivers and bigger engine capacities than them. But with Chinetti driving a history-making 23 hours of the 24-hour race, Ferrari won with an average speed of 132km/h.

Just when you thought that speed was quick, 1964 saw Jean Guichet and Nino Vaccarella win with an average speed of 195km/h in their 275 P (main photo), with two 330 Ps following in second and third place. Both models were powered by different V12 engines, with the 275 P producing 238kW and weighing 755 kilograms, whereas the 330 P pumped out 275kW at a heavier weight 785kg. Quite often, engines were swapped between models.

Gone are the days of the likes of Chinetti driving long stints behind the wheel, Alessandro Pier Guidi, James Calado, and Daniel Serra took the 488 GTE to victory at last year’s GT Le Mans Manufacturers Championship, taking it to Ferrari’s 27th class victory. To relive the race, the film, Le Mans Experience can be viewed, and you can virtually drive the 488 GTE on a simulator around the French circuit.

The museum also currently features two other exhibitions, Hypercars - The evolution of uniqueness and 90 years - Scuderia Ferrari, the complete story.

Ferrari at 24 Heures du Mans is on show until 19 April 2020.
