Ford trademarks Stormtrak name in Europe

Towards the end of 2019 Ford trademarked the Stormtrak name in Europe.

The filing was discovered by AutoGuide, and the publication believes the name could be used on a jacked-up Subaru Outback-style wagon model, which is rumoured to be the replacement for the fourth-generation Mondeo.

If this is indeed the case, it's unclear whether the company will choose to brand the vehicle as the Ford Mondeo Stormtrak or the simply as the Ford Stormtrak.

The likelihood of such a vehicle emerging rose last year when spy photos emerged of an engineering mule with taller-than-usual suspension, a wagon body, and clad in disfigured panels borrowed from a Focus.

Rumours indicate the Outback-style wagon will use a stretched and widened version of the platform employed by the latest Focus and Escape.

Although "executive" sedans and wagons were once popular models in Europe, sales have slipped dramatically over the past two decades, with the sector squeezed by more affordable models from premium brands, crossover vehicles, and the growing size of small cars.

It's possible the Stormtrak name is destined for some other vehicle. Given the outdoorsy connotations of Stormtrak, other possible applications include a variant of the Ranger ute or one of Ford crossovers, including the Puma and Kuga/Escape.

Although not all trademarked names end up on production vehicles, previously unearthed filings, such as Mach-E and Puma, have turned up showroom-ready vehicles.
