Toyota confirms Yaris-based crossover for Europe

Toyota will beef up its crossover range with a new model which will be based on the GA-B platform used for the latest Yaris hatch.

Given the as-yet-unnamed model's underpinnings, the new car will likely be smaller than the C-HR and serve as an entry point into the company's crossover range.

The new Yaris-based crossover will be built at the company's French factory near Valenciennes, which also produces the Yaris for the EU and UK markets.

It's unclear if the new crossover will be built elsewhere or whether it will be available in Australia.

In Europe, the Yaris will be available with 1.0- and 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engines, as well as a 1.5-litre three-cylinder hybrid powertrain.

The official sketch of the new car (top) shows it will be quite different to the company's other sub-C-HR model, the Raize, which is available in Japan.

At just under four metres in length, the Raize is petite. It's powered by a 72kW/140Nm turbocharged three-cylinder fitted with a CVT, and available with either front- or all-wheel drive.

Essentially a Daihatsu Rocky with a different front bumper and grille, the Raize rides on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture, a variant of the TNGA component matrix used by all of Toyota's latest vehicles.

The Raize has already been ruled out for Australia.
