Ford beats Ram and Chevy in US pickup race

Sales of utes in Australia are a regular point of discussion.

About 210,000 of them found buyers last year, equating to makes share of 20 per cent, and the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger topped the overall sales charts once again.

But that's nothing when compared to the USA's love of what it calls pickup trucks. I was just looking up some figures for my own edification, but figured it was worth a share.

Ford was the leader for the 43rd year in succession. Its F-Series sales were actually down 1.4 per cent, but it still managed to find a staggering 896,526 buyers.

FCA's Ram brand finished second with its pickup family (it clumps together the 1500, 2500 and 3500) finding 633,694 buyers, growth of 18 per cent. The decision to sell two generations of the 1500 model concurrently is paying off.

Chevy's Silverado family managed 575,600 sales (down 1.7 per cent) to hang onto third spot, however if you include the GMC Sierra (same parent company, same pickup, more luxury) this tally is substantially improved to 807,923.

A distant fourth is Australia's market leader Toyota, with its Tundra finding 111,673 buyers and falling 5.6 per cent. The Honda Ridgeline sales tally was 33,334 (up 9 per cent), while the Nissan Titan dropped an alarming 37.5 per cent to 31,514.

When it comes to the smaller pickup offerings, broadly similar in size to the vehicles that dominate in the Australian market, the breakdown is quite different.

Toyota is market leader with the Tacoma (sort of the US's HiLux equivalent but quite different) managing 248,801 sales, up 1.3 per cent.

Chevy's Colorado (wearing different skin to Holden's) found 122,304 buyers, growing to 155,129 when the GMC Canyon is added.

Ford's newly reintroduced US-made Ranger found 89,572 buyers over the chunk of the year in which it was on sale, beating Nissan's ancient (Navara D40-based) Frontier that found 72,369 buyers, and the new Jeep Gladiator, which found 40,047 buyers in half a year.
