Recall roundup: Mazda, Volvo, BMW

A number of models have suffered recalls in this first month of 2020, including examples from Mazda, Volvo and BMW.

Mazda

The new-generation Mazda3 is the subject of two recalls in January. The first, affecting 13,768 examples of the popular small car, involves its autonomous emergency braking system.

The system may incorrectly detect an object in front of the vehicle, forcing the car to brake unnecessarily.

A VIN list of affected vehicles can be viewed online, as can the recall notice, though Mazda will contact affected customers to advise them to make an appointment at their dealer for a free fix.

The second, affecting 14,853 vehicles, involves the car’s start-stop system. Affected 3s may stop and fail to start again unless the driver uses the Start/Stop button.

Again, Mazda is writing to owners to tell them to make a free repair appointment. The VIN list for affect models can be found here, and the recall notice here.

Volvo

Another of the first product recalls of 2020 is for an issue we’ve seen before.

Volvo has issued a recall notice for cars equipped with 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engines.

As with the two recall notices it issued last year, the defect involves an engine valve which may leak and cause the intake manifold to melt or deform.

The recall affects V40 and V40 Cross Country, S60, V60, XC60 and S90 models across model years 2014 to 2017.

Volvo has issued two separate recall notices (here and here). The VIN list of the first lists 1014 affected vehicles, while the other lists 468 vehicles.

The company is writing to owners of affected vehicles.

If the intake manifold deforms, owners may experience unusual engine operation or the possibility of a localised engine bay fire.

BMW

Finally, BMW has issued a recall notice for M5 and M8 models from model year 2019.

There are 54 vehicles with a transmission wiring harness that may short-circuit and shift the transmission into neutral.

The transmission will enter its emergency mode, engaging the parking lock when the vehicle is restarted.

You can view the original recall notice here and VIN list here. It tells owners to go to the BMW website and check if their vehicle has any outstanding recalls.
