Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid EV revealed at Consumer Electronics Show

Jeep has previewed its upcoming trio of plug-in hybrid SUVs, the Wrangler, Compass and Renegade 4xe.

The rugged Wrangler will be the next Jeep to be electrified as the brand marches toward its goal of offering electrification across its range by 2022.

The Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid was revealed at CES 2020 this week, sharing the spotlight with the previously revealed Compass 4xe and Renegade 4xe.

Visually, it's distinguished from regular Wranglers only through some subtle blue accents, 4xe badges, and a charging port on the front guard.

Jeep wasn’t forthcoming with information about the Wrangler’s powertrain, but, as the regular Wrangler (above) shares the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 with the Chrysler Pacifica minivan, it could feature a similar hybrid set-up to the Pacifica Hybrid.

In the people carrier, the 3.6-litre V6 is paired with a 16kWh lithium-ion battery, good for an electric-only range of 51km.

The key configuration difference between the Pacifica and the Wrangler, however, is the Pacifica is front-wheel-drive and the Wrangler is a tough muddin’ four-wheel-drive.

While we don’t yet know how the Wrangler’s electrified powertrain has been set up, we already know technical details for the Compass and Renegade 4xe.

The Renegade 4xe has been confirmed as having a 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, mated to a six-speed automatic and a 99kW electric motor mounted on the rear subframe.

Combined output is between 141kW and 176kW, depending on the trim.

The Compass 4xe is expected to use the same drivetrain that is actually said to aid off-road ability, the rear electric motor able to precisely apportion its 258Nm of torque between each rear wheel.

The Renegade 4xe will be available in trail-rated Trailhawk trim, and Jeep claims it can wade through water up to 60cm deep.

Electric-only range for the Renegade 4xe is 49km.

Jeep says it’ll reveal additional information about the 4xe models at this year’s Geneva, New York and Beijing motor shows.

The Renegade 4xe is slated for launch in Europe in June 2020, with the Compass 4xe following in July or August. The Wrangler 4xe will follow before year’s end.

FCA has yet to confirm whether the 4xe models will be introduced to Australia, though Jeep’s global president Christian Meunier has said he wants the brand to become ‘the greenest SUV brand in the world’ by 2022.

To that end, Jeep aims to have electrified versions of all its models by 2022. With the reveal of this 4xe trio, that’ll just leave the Gladiator ute, Cherokee and Grand Cherokee SUVs.

Jeep already sells a plug-in hybrid in China, the Commander PHEV (above).

It features a 13kWh lithium-ion battery pack mated to a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, as well as two electric motors that are both capable of driving the vehicle’s wheels.

Maximum electric range is 70km.

Based on the Cherokee, the Commander (five-seater) and Grand Commander (seven-seater) are exclusive to China and there’s no sign of that changing, no matter how complementary such a model would be in Jeep's Australian range.
