Nissan unveils new twin-motor electric powertrain, and sound insulation material

New e-4orce electric drivetrain is said to improve both performance and ride comfort.

Nissan will have a new "acoustic meta-material" and twin-motor all-wheel drive electric drivetrain on display at CES 2020 in Las Vegas.

Dubbed e-4orce (pronounced e-Force), the new system is said to incorporate learnings from both the GT-R's ATTESA E-TS and the Patrol's 4x4 systems.

Although power and torque figures have yet to be released, Nissan promises it will "deliver balanced, predictable power and handling on par with many premium sports cars".

Additionally, power, torque and regenerative braking from both motors is managed to "minimise vehicle pitch and dive". The company says the system has also been tuned to minimise irregular movement on rough and bumpy roads.

Although the company issued press photos of a Leaf prototype with the e-4orce powertrain, it is being displayed at CES underneath the Arriya concept.

Also on display is a new "acoustic meta-material", which features a lattice structure and thin layer of plastic film designed to reflect away most noise in the 500 to 1200 hertz frequency range.

Nissan claims the new material weighs about a quarter of the heavy rubber padding most commonly used to provide noise insulation in today's cars.

The company says the new lighter material should cost around the same or less than current products. This means, if or when it enters production, it could be used in smaller vehicles, where weight and cost are important factors.
