2022 Fisker Ocean revealed further, US pricing announced

Fisker has debuted its Ocean SUV at this year’s CES, featuring a Tesla-beating price tag.

Fisker has already touted its innovative, flexible leases for the upcoming Ocean SUV, but now it's revealed how much it'll cost to buy one outright. In the US, that is, although an Australian launch has been promised.

The nascent brand’s electric SUV will be priced from US$29,999 (A$43,268). That price includes the U.S. government’s $7500 (A$10,817) tax credit for battery-electric vehicles.

In the US, cars are eligible for this tax credit until their manufacturer sells 200,000 electric vehicles. Electric vehicles made by Tesla and General Motors are no longer eligible for the credit.

The Ocean’s sharp price means it costs the same as the entry-level (and much smaller) Nissan Leaf, and will undercut its upcoming rival, the Tesla Model Y, by around US$10,000 (A$14,423).

Fisker revealed a “complete production-intent prototype” of its EV this week at CES 2020.

It also revealed the Ocean’s platform will underpin two additional Fisker models, information on which will be revealed this year.

The company will open experience centres this year and prospective customers will be able to schedule test drives of the Ocean via the Fisker app next year.

If you don’t want to buy an Ocean outright, you can lease it for US$379 (A$560) per month regardless of where in the US you live.

There are no long-term contracts and lessees can drive more than 48,000km per year. Prospective lessees can reserve an Ocean now via the Fisker app if they pay a refundable US$250 (A$360) deposit.

At the heart of the Ocean is an 80kWh battery pack, good for an electric range of between 400 and 480 kilometres under US EPA standards.

Production is set to start next year, with deliveries following in 2022.

Marketed as the world’s most sustainable vehicle, the Ocean’s interior features carpets made from old fishing nets, and upholstery made from recycled clothing and bottles.

There’s also a full-length solar roof that helps power the car.

The Ocean also has a number of 'surprise and delight' features. With the push of a single button, the available California Mode will drop all windows – including the tailgate window – and open the panoramic sunroof.

Inside, Fisker’s “crystal” lighting is available, featuring lights in the front seats. There’s also a Karaoke Mode that projects song lyrics on the heads-up display.

Company founder Henrik Fisker has some lofty goals for his namesake company.

Between 2022 and 2027, the company aims to produce more than 1 million vehicles. Fisker says it’s secured a global supply chain and it’ll export the car globally, with an Australian launch confirmed.
