Ford quashes rumours of MEB-based Mustang EV

That was fast.

Just days after it was reported Ford was considering using the Mustang badge on a smaller, Volkswagen-based electric crossover, a Ford spokesperson has refuted these plans.

The spokesperson reached out to Ford Authority, saying, “There are no plans to offer an all-electric Mustang based on VW’s MEB architecture.”

“We remain on track to offer one MEB-based fully electric car for our European customers and are considering a second vehicle. Beyond that, we don’t comment on speculation about future products.”

Those comments don’t rule out another EV wearing the famed galloping horse logo but they rule out such a car using the MEB platform.

That leaves the upcoming MEB-based Ford’s appearance a mystery.

Ford engineers have reportedly been in discussions with their Volkswagen counterparts to modify the architecture to ensure a more distinctly Ford appearance, including a longer bonnet.

It’s possible the car could still borrow some Mustang cues, if not the name, much as the Chevrolet Blazer incorporates various design elements from the Camaro.

The car is slated for launch in 2023, Ford announcing it has plans to sell at least 600,000 MEB-based vehicles over a six-year period.

Mustang purists will undoubtedly be delighted the iconic name won’t be used on a restyled Volkswagen.

Applying the Mustang nameplate to not only a crossover but an electric one has already proved controversial, if internet comments sections are anything to go by.

Though the Mustang Mach-E has yet to go on sale, Ford executives have commented publicly about creating a “family” of Mustangs.

This herd could include a second EV crossover.

In addition to the Europe-focused, MEB-based EV, Ford will also introduce an EV using Rivian’s skateboard platform. It may, however, be sold under the luxury Lincoln brand.
