Ford patents canopy-style windscreen

Ford could be readying an extended, canopy-style windscreen, according to a new patent application discovered by forum users.

The patent filing, posted on Mach E Club, shows a windscreen extending almost the length of a car's roof. It appears to be reinforced with a set of roof rails – although Ford offers a number of possible ways to strengthen the glass – called a 'roof bow'.

The whole assembly could be hidden by a metal panel (a roof, in other words) and would be able to effectively disperse energy in a serious side-impact accident.

Should it come to fruition, the patent could allow Ford to give its cars a unique look with the windscreen design. Tesla has fitted the Model X with an extended windscreen, but the larger glass area and unique design make it a hard part to source.

It also means the Model X's windscreen is more expensive and difficult to replace than a more conventional panel.

Ford has been active in patenting new technologies related to the roof and doors of its vehicles, especially with the Bronco.

Earlier this year, patent filings from Ford revealed the company could be working on ways to integrate side-impact airbags into a tubular door, along with technology to improve side protection when the doors have been removed entirely.

Reports earlier this year emerged stating the new Bronco will be available with both a folding canvas top and removable doors as Ford chases a part of the market the Jeep Wrangler has all to itself at the moment.

Patents discovered in April seemed to back up claims regarding its canvas top.
