2020 Volkswagen Golf GTI spied
An eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI is coming soon, with the same tech-heavy interior as the regular Mk8 Golf and a more powerful engine.
The Mk8 Volkswagen Golf GTI has been snapped testing in Europe.
Don't be fooled by this particular Golf GTI's dowdy-looking front end, behind the clever camouflage is a more aggressive front bar with extra cooling for its more powerful engine.
There are wider side sills and the rear is home to a racy-looking diffuser, along with larger exhaust pipes – that are actually exposed, not hidden behind a chrome insert on the bumper – hinting at the GTI's extra performance potential.
As with the current model, we'd suggest the front end will be home to a red pin-striped grille.
When it launches, the new Golf GTI is expected to have more than 215kW of power from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, mated with a dual-clutch transmission. Volkswagen hasn't confirmed whether a manual will be offered. Cross your fingers, purists.
Currently, the most powerful GTI you can buy is the limited-run TCR – at least, it will be when it arrives in the middle of 2020.
It makes 213kW from its 2.0-litre engine, put to the road through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a locking front differential.
Inside, the GTI promises to be a more modern beast than the current model. As with the wider Mk8 Golf range, you can expect to see a digital instrument binnacle and widescreen infotainment system in the new GTI, presumably with the usual smattering of red highlights.
When will the new Golf arrive in Australia?
Volkswagen Australia is yet to announce exact timing and pricing of the new Golf, however a representative for the company says it should arrive in local showrooms in late 2020.
There's no word on when the GTI will touch down, however.
