Honda Augmented Driving Concept unveiled

The Honda Augmented Driving Concept, as well as a number of new technologies, will be on display at the automaker's stand at CES 2020, which takes place in Las Vegas next January.

The Augmented Driving Concept is a roadster that can be changed from autonomous to manual driving at the flick of a switch.

Honda says the concept was conceived as a way for people to enjoy the possibilities of mobility when freed from the task of driving, while still allowing them to "experience the emotion and thrill of driving" when they want to.

When in manual mode, the self-driving systems are on standby and monitoring the driver's behaviour. So, presumably, if you feel the need to take a photo at a second's notice, the car will automatically take over driving responsibilities.

The concept also features a new steering wheel design where the driver pulls the wheel to slow down, and pushes the wheel to accelerate. The car starts up when the steering wheel is given two pats.

Honda's CES stand will feature Smartphone as Brain, which allows motorcycle riders to interact with minimal distraction with their smartphones using voice commands and switches on the handle bars.

There will also be a virtual reality experience where Honda will show its vision for what mobility could look like in 2035, including vehicle-to-anything (V2X) communication, autonomous pods, and flights in a vertical take-off and landing plane.

Other items at the stand include a voice assistant that responds to the key phrase "OK Honda", and 1kWh rechargeable battery packs, which can be used for powering construction tools, quad bikes, mobility scooters or a replacement for diesel generators.
