BMW Z4 M40i gets a power boost for 2020

The BMW Z4 M40i will get a power boost for 2020, and a significant performance improvement to go with it.

The range-topping BMW Z4 currently shares its turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine with the Toyota Supra, along with its claimed 250kW and 500Nm outputs.

But Z4 M40i buyers from early in 2020 will get an uprated version of the same engine making 285kW and 500Nm – identical to what's on offer in the M340i xDrive and X3 M40i with which the roadster shares its engine.

The result is a claimed 4.1-second sprint to 100km/h.

BMW hasn't changed pricing, keeping the sticker at $124,900 before on-road costs.

Previously, the Z4 M40i was good for a claimed 100km/h sprint time of 4.5 seconds – slightly slower than Toyota's claim of 4.4 seconds for the Supra.

But real-world tests of the Supra have returned times as low as 4.2 seconds to 100km/h, suggesting it's more powerful than Toyota is letting on.
