Honda S2000 reborn to celebrate 20th anniversary
There's no new S2000, but Honda has overhauled a classic roadster to celebrate 20 years since production started.
The Honda S2000 is making a comeback... but not as an all-new model to rival the BMW Z4 and Porsche Boxster.
To celebrate 20 years since the rev-happy roadster's launch, Honda Japan is preparing a custom one-off for the Tokyo Auto Salon. And no, it's not standard.
For starters, the exterior has been given a minor update for 2020, with a more aggressive front bar, side skirts, rear spoiler, and fenders. The changes aren't dramatic, but they do make the S2000 look a bit more planted and aggressive, which is no bad thing.
Under the skin is an AP1 chassis – which means it was built between 1999 and 2003 – that's been updated with a more modern suspension. Honda hasn't gone into detail about what's been updated, however.
The car sits on a set of Advan RZ2 wheels, presumably wrapped in sticky rubber to match.
Inside, there are red seats and a fresh cover for the stereo system. Once again, details are fleeting.
Honda hasn't confirmed whether the parts featured will make production, but the car is dubbed the 20th Anniversary Prototype, not a concept, so there is a chance.
Along with the reborn S2000, Honda will show off an EK9 Civic Type R that's been given a makeover to become the "Civic Cyber Night Japan Cruiser 2020".
Apparently it's been developed for the "modern youth" and shines a light on "a neo-Japan where the near future and underground are disturbed".
