2020 BMW X2 facelift, plug-in hybrid and EV spied
Changes are coming to BMW's smallest crossover coupe, and they seem to include new electrified drivetrain options.
BMW is preparing a facelift for its the X2, and the crossover looks as though it will gain plug-in hybrid and pure electric variants.
Spied on the back of a trailer, the updated X2 looks as though it will have a revised grille design and new headlight graphics.
Circular fog lights were once a signature of BMW's range of X crossovers, but since the introduction of the current X3, X5 and X7 this feature has been steadily eliminated.
The "fog lights" on this prototype are just printouts stuck onto the front bumper. Photos of a plug-in hybrid and electric prototypes (below) show they will be replaced by a set of fake air intakes, while the lower section of the bumper has been redesigned with a stronger horizontal theme.
The new plug-in hybrid model will likely share its powertrain with the X1 xDrive25e.
The plug-in hybrid X1 features a 92kW/220Nm 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine driving the front wheels, and a 70kW/165Nm electric motor for the rear axle.
Together they deliver a total of 165kW of power and 385Nm of torque. Using the WLTP standard, the X1's 9.9kWh battery is good for up to 55km of pure electric driving.
Our spy photography agency has also snapped photos of a fully electric vehicle X2 (above) during cold weather testing in Sweden.
It's unclear if this car is indicative of a new EV variant for the X2 or a mule to test electric drivetrains for vehicles based on the front- and all-wheel drive UKL platform.
Should there be an electric X2 — or perhaps an iX2 — in BMW's model plan, we expect it to feature some styling changes, including a closed off grille, new bumpers, unique alloy wheels, and blue highlights.
