BMW to add wireless Android Auto from mid-2020

Android Auto is coming to BMW vehicles from July 2020, but availability will be limited a small number of phone models.

A BMW spokesperson confirmed only the wireless form of Android Auto will be offered, meaning BMW's implementation is only compatible, at this stage, with a small selection of high-end Android phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S8 to S10+, Note 8 to 10, and the Google Pixel range.

Android Auto will also only be available on cars fitted with at least version 7.0 of BMW's infotainment operating system.

Users will be able to access Google Maps navigation, audio playback and other features via their car's built-in touchscreen, as well as through the Google Assistant voice recognition system.

On the plus side, navigation and other data will also be shown on car's digital instrumentation screen and head-up display.

The news of Android Auto's adoption comes a week after BMW announced it stop charging subscription fees for Apple CarPlay functionality.

BMW will demonstrate Android Auto integration at CES 2020 in January before rolling it out globally from July 2020.
