2020 BMW 4 Series shows its snout in new spy photos

BMW's tall new grille is clearer than ever on the upcoming second-generation 4 Series.

BMW’s new 2020 4 Series coupe has been spied testing on public roads with even less camouflage than before.

The lighter camouflage is concentrated up front, where a new mesh over the grille confirms the news we all knew was coming: the new 4er will receive the controversial, nostril-like grilles from the Concept 4 revealed at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

The car spied here appears to be an M Sport variant, judging by the sporty lower front intakes and dual exhaust tips that resemble those of M Sport derivatives of the 3 Series.

The grille on this prototype appears to be shorter and wider than both the concept car and leaked factory photos we’ve seen previously, suggesting different grille shapes and sizes could be on the cards depending on the variant.

The remaining shots don’t show anything new – the rest of the 4er’s body is covered in light camouflage masking its slim, 2 Series Gran Coupe-like taillights and 8 Series-esque roofline.

While there are no new interior shots, earlier images have shown the cabin should look virtually identical to the 3 Series’, with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch central infotainment touchscreen running BMW’s seventh-generation iDrive system.

As with its sedan sibling, a range of four- and six-cylinder petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains are set to be offered, headlined at launch by a 275kW/500Nm 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six in the M440i xDrive.

A performance-focused M4 should arrive later on, powered by the 375kW/600Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six from the X3 M Competition crossover.

With just three weeks left in 2019, we’d wager the new BMW 4 Series will be revealed in early 2020, potentially at the Geneva motor show in March.
