The first S-badged special-edition Subaru WRX STI to hit North America might just look like a faster, more hardcore version of the dependable all-paw hero we have known for years.

However, as Justin T. Westbrook explains, getting it certified for sale in the United States was a lengthy process involving confused government bodies, complex crash testing and a whole load of money.

This isn’t any normal 1960s Toyota Corolla. Under the bonnet is a hulking 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated V8 lifted from a 2010 Lexus ISF, producing 310kW of power and 503Nm of torque.

Fitting the eight-speed automatic and Lexus driveline wasn’t easy - the Toyota’s dimensions had to be significantly modified to facilitate the swap. Sadly - for most - the IS’ modern ABS and traction control systems couldn’t be carried over, so the Corolla is certainly a handful.
