Volkswagen appoints former Rolls-Royce and BMW chief designer

Jozef Kaban will return to where it all began, to take the design reigns at the Volkswagen brand from the middle of 2020.

Jozef Kaban, former head of design for Rolls-Royce, BMW and Skoda, has been appointed as the chief designer for the Volkswagen brand.

Kaban will begin his new job on July 1, 2020, presumably because of a non-compete clause in his contract with the BMW Group, where he worked from early 2017 until October this year.

From 2017 to March 2019, Kaban was the head of design for the BMW brand. He then moved on to a similar role at Rolls-Royce.

The appointment sees Kaban return to the automaker he has worked at for most of his professional life, and the one he joined straight out of university in 1993.

In 1998 he was appointed head of exterior design at Bugatti, and is widely credited for his role in shaping the Veyron hypercar.

From 2003 to 2006 Kaban headed up exterior design at Audi, and from 2008 to 2017 he was the lead designer at Skoda.

With Kaban coming back to Volkswagen, the automaker is shuffling the management pack. Klaus Bischoff, current head of design for the Volkswagen brand, will move upstairs to become the design chief for the entire conglomerate, where he replaces Michael Mauer.

Mauer will then step back to concentrate on his role as head of design for Porsche.
