2021 Jaguar F-Type to debut on 2 December

Jaguar’s seductive F-Type is getting a substantial refresh, the big reveal taking place in just a few days.

Jaguar has released a teaser video of the upcoming, revised F-Type coupe and convertible, set to be revealed on 2 December.

There’s not much to see in the six-second video – the only part of the car visible is the gauge cluster – but you can hear the intoxicating sound of the F-Type’s V8 engine.

That indicates the thunderous, supercharged 5.0-litre V8 will continue. In R guise, the V8 produces 405kW and 680Nm while the range-topping SVR ekes out an additional 18kW and 20Nm.

There’s a good chance Jaguar Land Rover’s new Ingenium inline six will find its way under the bonnet as Jaguar Land Rover phases out its supercharged 3.0-litre V6. The new six uses a twin-scroll turbocharger and an electric supercharger and, in its most powerful tune, produces 294kW and 550Nm.

That tune will arrive here next year in the flagship Range Rover. The twin-charged 3.0-litre hauls the big SUV to 100km/h in just 6.3 seconds, so you can imagine how fleet the F-Type six will be.

For comparison, the current model’s supercharged V6 produces 250-280kW and 450-460Nm, depending on the tune.

The death of the current six, however, means the F-Type’s manual transmission may go with it. The three-pedal option has only ever been available with the V6, with the four and V8 remaining auto-only.

Expect the current car’s base four-cylinder to carry over. Also a member of the Ingenium modular engine family, the F-Type’s 2.0-litre turbocharged four produces 221kW and 400Nm.

There’s arguably not a line wrong on the current F-Type but, as spy photos from earlier this year show, Jaguar may just have made a great thing better.

Perhaps the most obvious change are the headlights, now slimmer and more horizontally-oriented and closer to the XE, XF and F-Pace in appearance. With the new lights come a redesigned bonnet, grille, and front bumper and quarter panels.

Inside, expect an updated infotainment system like in the refreshed XE.

The F-Type first appeared here in 2013 and this substantial refresh should give it a new lease on life, even if it’s not a ground-up redesign.

In the spirit of the American celebration of Thanksgiving, which took place the other day, let’s be grateful Jaguar is continuing to keep the F-Type around.

And, incidentally, it’s the Americans we should thank as the US is the F-Type’s largest individual market. Fortunately, sales have held steady there and in the European market even amidst the indefatigable rise of the SUV.
