2020 BMW M550i: ‘Pure’ V8 sedan priced from $134,900

The BMW M550i xDrive will be a cut-price M5 alternative in Australia, with the twin-turbo V8 sedan kicking off at $134,900 before on-road costs when it arrives early in 2020.

The entry-level M550i xDrive will be badged Pure, a label previously reserved for pared-back M3 and M2 variants, and will undercut the fully-specced M550i xDrive by $15,000.

Despite its lower sticker price, the all-wheel drive Pure is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine making 390kW and 750Nm, good for a 100km/h sprint time of just 3.8 seconds.

Under the skin, it gets M Sport brakes, an adaptive suspension, an M Sport differential, and a set of 20-inch alloy wheels.

The interior gets wood trim, sport seats, a set of digital instruments, a head-up display, the BMW Driving Assistant Plus package, and a surround sound system.

Moving to the M550i xDrive bumps the price to $149,900 before on-road costs, and gives you the same 4.4-litre engine and eight-speed automatic transmission.

The extra money buys you active anti-roll stabilisation and rear-wheel steering, laser headlights, soft close doors, an instrument panel trimmed in leather, a sunroof, and metallic paint – although the sunroof ($3000) and metallic paint ($2000) are optional on the Pure.

Options on the M550i xDrive include the Innovations Package ($1700) with a display key, remote parking and gesture control, while the Indulgence Package ($7500) gives you rear seat entertainment, massaging front seats, and TV for the iDrive system.

Compared to the M5 Competition, the M550i xDrive Pure is a bit of a performance bargain. It's more than $95,000 cheaper than the M5, but only 0.4 seconds slower to 100km/h.
