2020 Ssangyong Korando pricing and specs

There was a time when a then-fledgling Hyundai and Kia had some of the lowest prices, longest feature lists and most generous warranties in the business.

Now, they’ve got some cutthroat competition from a crosstown competitor – Ssangyong.

The Korean-built Ssangyong Korando range is now available with petrol power and an entry price $6,000 lower than the initial diesel-powered Launch Edition models.

Petrol-powered Korandos use a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, mated to either a six-speed manual or Aisin six-speed automatic, and producing 120kW and 280Nm, the latter between 1500rpm and 4000rpm.

The boosted four requires 95 RON premium unleaded.

The expanded range opens with the Korando EX, priced at $26,990 drive-away for the manual or $28,990 drive-away for the automatic. It’s the only Korando to have the option of a manual transmission.

Standard safety equipment includes autonomous emergency braking, front collision warning, lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist. Inside, there’s an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a 3.5-inch LCD instrument cluster.

There’s also a reversing camera, cruise control, automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers. EX models wear 17-inch alloy wheels.

Next up is the Korando ELX petrol, priced at $30,990 drive-away. Like the ELX diesel ($33,990 drive-away), it features a leather steering wheel, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, smart key entry, and front and rear parking sensors.

It’s distinguished externally from the EX through the application of LED daytime running lights and 18-inch ‘diamond-cut’ alloy wheels.

The ultimate Korando is the Korando Ultimate. Priced at $36,990 drive-away ($39,990 drive-away for the diesel), it adds a raft of luxury features.

These include adaptive cruise control, a tyre-pressure monitoring system, heated steering wheel, power sunroof and tailgate, dual-zone climate control, and leather seats that are heated front and rear and ventilated up front.

It also adds a larger, 10.25-inch LCD instrument cluster, an electric park brake, a chrome-trimmed grille and 19-inch ‘diamond-cut’ alloy wheels.

Ssangyong advises EX models won’t reach dealerships until early 2020 but ELX and Ultimate models are available now. The ELX and Ultimate diesels will also lose their Launch Edition suffix for the new year, naturally.

All Korandos feature Ssangyong’s 777 Customer Care Package – a seven-year, unlimited kilometre warranty, seven-year roadside assist, and a seven-year capped-price servicing for both private and fleet customers.

Though the Korando is sized almost identically to the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage, its base price is $2,000 lower than the cheapest Tucson and $3,000 lower than the cheapest Sportage.
