Maserati mule heralds arrival of new engine ahead of full reveal in 2020

Factory-backed pics are external only for now, but beneath the skin beats Maserati's new heart

Darcy Foster • Maserati has released photos of a test-mule running the firm’s all-new '100 per cent Maserati' engine.

Reports suggest that this powertrain will underpin Maserati’s incoming sports car due to be unveiled in Modena in May next year.

Whether that’s the new GranTurismo or a smaller offering more closely-resembling the 2014 Alfieri concept, we aren’t sure.

Initial reports suggested that the Italian firm was focussing primarily on an electric powertrain but a recent teaser featuring a revving engine hint that Maserati’s newest model since 2015 will be a hybrid or even combustion-powered only.

There’s no details on what type of engine that is but Maserati says it will be the first in a family of new motors that may power the next generation Ghibli, Quattroporte and Levante.

Even though the test-mule’s camouflaged body keeps aesthetic design vague, Maserati appears to be using a modified version of the Alfa-Romeo 4C’s chassis.

This is reportedly only for testing, but the dimensions of the test-mule suggest that the powertrain may be fitted to a vehicle of similar stature.

As both the GranTurismo and Alfieri concept were front-engined 2+2 coupes and the test-mule’s engine looks to be situated behind the cabin, it suggests that this new Maserati may be an entirely new vehicle in its lineup.

Maserati celebrated the end of GranTurismo production with a special edition called the Zeda, revealed to the public last week.
