Mitsubishi is gunning for the all-conquering Kia Picanto with the updated Mirage, here in the first half of 2020.

Mitsubishi has unveiled an update for its last passenger car in Australia, the Mirage hatch, as it looks to take down the all-conquering Kia Picanto.

Mitsubishi sold 9500 Mirages at the model's peak in 2013, but just 500 have been sold this year – well down on the 4788 sales Kia reports for the Picanto.

When it arrives in the second quarter of 2020, the updated Mirage will take the fight to Kia with an updated look and fresh technology for the interior.

It's the final model in Mitsubishi's lineup to get the brand's bold Dynamic Shield face, more angular headlamps, a chunkier bumper, and chrome inserts differentiating it from the outgoing model.

New designs for the 15-inch alloy wheels will be offered, and a range of bright colours have been added to the options list.

Inside, the Mirage gains a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Mitsubishi also says there are small trim changes, such as piping and stitching on the seats.

What hasn't changed is the engine. Mitsubishi hasn't detailed any changes to the powertrain, which means power will likely come from the same 1.2-litre petrol engine as before, making the same 57kW and 100Nm.

It's likely the hatchback will remain the only body style offered in Australia, after the sedan was axed in 2016.

Pricing for the Mirage currently starts at $15,490 drive-away for the ES, but that could change when the new model touches down.

When it arrives the updated Mirage will be the only passenger car in Mitsubishi's local line-up, as the brand pivots to focus on utes, vans, and SUVs.
