2020 Volvo S90 spied

Volvo's large sedan will be given a very minor mid-life tweak, but the changes appear to be subtle.

Darcy Foster • A facelifted version of the Volvo S90 has been spied testing in public.

Though the lower half of the front fascia is disguised in a vinyl wrap, an updated grille more in line with the V60 wagon and S60 sedan can be spotted, while an LED matrix lighting system appears to round off changes at the front.

Vinyl wrap again hides the majority of the sheetmetal changes at the rear of the vehicle, but the tail-light design appears to be more three-dimensional. The design appears to borrow from the Polestar 1 hybrid supercar, which has recently entered production.

The disguised appearance of the diffuser also suggests there are changes to that area of the vehicle, but it's hard to discern exactly what they'll be in our latest images.

The facelifted S90 is expected to share its drivetrains with the facelifted XC90 SUV, which was upgraded to include mild-hybrid engines, brake-by-wire battery charging, and new safety technology such as steering assistance in the City Safety monitoring system, and autonomous braking in heavy traffic situations.

Behind the wheel, Volvo’s new Android-based infotainment system debuting on the Polestar 2 may also feature, before it rolls out across the wider range – however this hasn't been confirmed.

Alternatively, we could see an updated version of the existing Sensus system, which recently gained Android Auto in the XC90.

Dropped from the local lineup earlier this year, the current-generation S90 was sold locally between October 2016 to January 2019, achieving a mere 93 sales in 2018.

Though its passenger car sales have declined, and the overall market is down more than eight per cent, Volvo is up 15.4 per cent year-to-date in 2019.
