2020 BMW 4 Series spied inside and out

BMW's two-door take on the 3 Series sedan has been snapped out in the open once again, and this time we can see the car's cabin.

The 2020 BMW 4 Series has been caught in the open once again, this time wearing less camouflage at the front end.

Our latest spy photos also reveal the 4 Series will share its interior design with the current 3 Series. That means the dashboard is home to a 12.3-inch infotainment display with BMW OS7.0, and the driver is faced with a 10.25-inch digital instrument binnacle.

There's nothing separating the 4er's interior from that of the 3er based on what we can see here, although BMW Australia may offer some unique trim options locally.

Externally, we're expecting to see more substantial differences between the 3 Series and 4 Series. Previous leaked images have revealed the car will get a huge grille inspired by the Concept 4, and our latest images back that up.

It's covered by camouflage here, but we can make out the top of two separate grille sections instead of the wider, slimmer linked unit used on the 3 Series.

The car's headlamps are more rounded than those of the 3 Series, too, in keeping with the design of BMW's flagship 8 Series coupe.

Down back, the 4 Series has taillights similar to those of the recently-revealed 2 Series Gran Coupe and X6 SUV. They're significantly slimmer and wider than those of the 3 Series, and have a more interesting light signature.

There's a subtle lip spoiler atop the bootlid, and the car's hips appear slightly rounder and more pronounced than those of the current car.

The rear bumper is home to two chunky exhaust outlets, and what looks like a diffuser-style insert.

Under the skin, the new 4 Series will share its CLAR underpinnings and interior with the latest 3 Series. This should make it lighter than the current model, which tends to do good things for handling.

A plug-in hybrid model is also likely. Rear- and all-wheel drive will be offered, along with a choice of coupe, convertible, and five-door Gran Coupe bodies.

Expect a range of four-cylinder and six-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines to underpin the core range, while the M4 will be powered by the same 'S58' 3.0-litre inline-six used in the X3 M Competition.
