2020 Citroen C5 Aircross Hybrid revealed, ‘under study’ for Oz
French crossover gets new 165kW PHEV drivetrain due in European showrooms mid-2020. An Australian introduction is still to be confirmed, but not ruled out.
The Citroen C5 Aircross Hybrid has been revealed for the European market, serving as the promised plug-in hybrid model previewed by a production-ready concept last year.
Distinguishable by its unique badging, Anodised Blue exterior accents, and of course the additional filler flap for the charge port, the aptly named 'C5 Aircross SUV Hybrid' is powered by a 132kW 1.6-litre 'PureTech 180' turbo petrol engine teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission, 80kW electric motor and 13.2kWh battery pack.
Combined power output is rated at 165kW, while claimed electric-only range is 50 kilometres (31mi) on the WLTP cycle. The electric motor also provides 320Nm of torque from rest.
Citroen says the C5 Aircross Hybrid can operate at speeds of up to 135km/h in EV mode, while combined fuel consumption and emissions are rated at 1.7L/100km and 39g/km respectively on the WLTP test regime.
Inside, there's a handful of specific features over conventional combustion-powered versions like a frameless rear-view mirror with EV Mode indicator, a hybrid drive mode selector next to the gearshift selector, and hybrid-specific graphics and menus for the 12.3-inch instrument cluster display and 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
The battery pack is stored under the rear seats, meaning the boot area is still between 460L and 600L depending on seat configuration with the second row retaining three individual folding and sliding seats.
Speaking of the battery, owners will be able to recharge the C5 Aircross Hybrid within two hours using the standard 7.4kW onboard charger and available 7kW wallbox. Using a domestic plug socket will take six hours to charge.
Owners will be able to monitor charge status and other functions via the MyCitroen mobile app, too.
Like the regular C5 Aircross range, the Hybrid is offered with the Advanced Comfort suite, including Progressive Hydraulic Cushion suspension, Advanced Comfort seats, along with 19 driver assistance and active safety systems.
First deliveries in Europe will commence "in the middle of 2020", with pricing in the UK starting at £35,340 ($66,081).
The C5 Aircross Hybrid will be produced at the company's factory in Rennes, France, alongside the petrol and diesel range.
By 2023 Citroen plans to have 80 per cent of its line-up offering a plug-in hybrid or electric version, with 100 per cent coverage due by 2025.
Australia
Citroen's local division has indicated the C5 Aircross Hybrid is "under study", though there's nothing to announce at this stage.
The standard C5 Aircross range went on sale in Australia in July, with prices kicking off at $39,990 for the entry-level 'Feel' variant.
All models Down Under are currently powered by a 121kW/240Nm 1.6-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol mated to a six-speed automatic, driving the front wheels.
