The 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan offers more safety equipment and the option of hybrid power, but buyers will be forced to pay more than before when it arrives late in November.

Priced in line with the hatchback, the new Corolla sedan will start at $23,335 before on-road costs in Ascent Sport manual guise, an increase of $2095 over the current entry-level Ascent sedan. Opting for the CVT transmission bumps that price to $24,835 before on-roads.

Power comes from a 2.0-litre petrol engine making 125kW and 200Nm, up 22kW and 27Nm over the outgoing car.

Countering the price rise is a strong list of standard inclusions, including Toyota Safety Sense with autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, road sign assist, active cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic headlights.

The cabin is home to an 8.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across the range, too.

For the first time, the Corolla Sedan is also available with a hybrid powertrain. It combines a 1.8-litre petrol engine and a pair of small electric motors to output 90kW of power. Toyota claims it returns 3.5L/100km on the combined cycle.

Pricing for the hybrid Ascent Sport starts at $26,335 before on-road costs, $1500 more than the equivalent petrol model. It gains keyless entry and start, however.

Moving up to the SX removes the manual option, with buyers instead given the choice between a petrol CVT ($28,235 before on-road costs) or hybrid ($29,735 before on-roads).

Standard equipment includes a 'premium' three-spoke steering wheel with paddle shifters, keyless entry and start, a wireless phone charger, factory satellite navigation with traffic updates, along with DAB digital radio. Blind-spot monitoring is also standard.

The range-topping ZR is only available with a petrol engine and a CVT, priced from $33,635 before on-road costs. A tilt/slide sunroof, 18-inch alloy wheels, heated sports seats trimmed in fake leather and suede, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and a nine-speaker JBL sound system.

It's also the only Corolla sedan to get a head-up display.

Servicing is in line with the Corolla hatch, which means you'll pay just $175 every 12 months or 15,000km.
