Fisker Ocean: Affordable electric crossover revealed

The electric carmaker has confirmed the name, as well as design of the front and rear ends, of its new car.

The Fisker Ocean has been partially revealed ahead of the full debut of a "production-intent" prototype in January 2020.

Measuring 4640mm long, the Ocean features thin head- and tail-light units, a broad stance, flush-fitting pop-out door handles, and a stepped side window line.

The standard drivetrain will include an 80kWh battery pack, which have a range rating of between 400 and 480 kilometres using the US EPA's methodology.

An available full-length solar roof can recharge the car's main battery pack, and in optimal conditions can provide up to 1600km of emissions- and cost-free driving.

To bolster the car's green credentials, the Ocean will have a vegan-friendly interior, as well as nylon carpets made from abandoned fishing net waste, and eco-suede with polyester fibres derived from recycled t-shirts, bottles and fabric.

The company says it will also use discarded rubber waste from tyre manufacturing.

Australia

Production of the Ocean is slated to commence some time during the second half of 2021, with deliveries set to commence in early 2022.

In the US it will be priced from around US$40,000 ($58,600), meaning it will compete against the Tesla Model Y.

Reservations for the car open on November 27, US time, when the company launches its mobile app. In addition to outright purchase, the Ocean, at least in the US, can also be leased on a flexible basis via a smartphone app.

After the Ocean becomes available in the US, the company intends to launch it into key overseas markets, including the UK. Australian availability has also been confirmed.
