2019 Honda Accord: Hybrid confirmed for Oz
New flagship sedan will offer petrol-electric power for the first time in nearly four years when it arrives in December.
Honda Australia has confirmed initial details for the 10th-generation Accord sedan line-up ahead of a December launch, with the headlining act to be the company's latest hybrid drivetrain.
The 2019 Accord will offer 1.5-litre turbo petrol and 2.0-litre hybrid powertrain options – the latter signalling a return to electrification for Honda's passenger car range.
Pairing a 2.0-litre Atkinson Cycle four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors and battery pack, quoting system outputs of 158kW and 315Nm. By comparison, the Toyota Camry's 2.5-litre hybrid system claims to put out a combined 160kW – though Toyota doesn't quote a torque figure.
Further details like fuel consumption are yet to be detailed, though we know the Accord Hybrid will drive the front wheels via a hybrid-optimised e-CVT transmission.
The second powertrain option will be a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine shared with the Civic and CR-V, tuned to deliver 140kW and 260Nm.
It appears the more powerful 2.0-litre turbo and 10-speed automatic available in the US will not be offered Down Under to replace the outgoing 3.5-litre V6.
"With the exception of NSX, this is the first hybrid in our local line-up since 2016 and understandably the Australian market and consumer preferences have evolved in that time, so it’s great to be able to give Honda customers that option once again," said Stephen Collins, director for Honda Australia.
"The all-new Accord will mark the return of Honda’s hybrid technology to the mainstream Australian market, supporting the company’s ‘2030 Vision’ and playing a key role in achieving its global electrification strategy."
Full pricing and specifications will be detailed closer to the Accord's December on-sale date, though the company has previously indicated the full suite of Honda Sensing driver assists – including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop&go, lane keep assist and high-beam assist – will be standard across the range much like the current model.
