2011 Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4 world’s first diesel hybrid

Peugeot announced earlier this year it would release HYbrid4 technology some time in 2011. Peugeot has now confirmed the technology will be released in 2011 with the launch of the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4.

The technology combines, for the first time in automotive history, a 2.0-litre turbo diesel four cylinder engine - producing 122kW and 300Nm - and a 28kW/200Nm electric motor. This, Peugeot says, will be good enough to give fuel economy figures of around 3.1L/100km. Also adding to the environment-soothing capabilities is the 99 grams of CO2 per kilometre which exits the exhaust. When compared to say, a Ford Falcon, which emits around 236gm of CO2 per kilometre, the new Pug will prove to be quite a bright shade of green.

Additionally, the HYbrid4 3008 will be capable of running in full-electric mode like so many of the new hybrid setups and concepts to be released. Peugeot say the car can cruise in full electric mode for urban driving in dense traffic areas using the 28kW electric motor.

The Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4, as the name suggests, is a four-wheel drive vehicle too. So it's safe and great for weekend recreational driving. Unlike the Toyota Prius, which is front-drive only, the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4 will open up the market for the hybrid recreational vehicle, first pathed by the Lexus RX400h in 2006 - a much more expensive proposition.

Different driving modes can be altered at the touch of a button inside the cabin. Ranging from sport mode, which sets the car up to be more driver's-focused rather than economy-focused, to ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle) mode which disengages the diesel-powered motor.

The car will also showcase Peugeot's latest STOP & START system in conjunction with a six-speed sequential gearbox. The gearbox is, essentially, a manual, only the gearbox changes gear for you. This allows for a smoother STOP & START initiation, and allows automatic-only drivers to utilise this technology previously only seen in manual vehicles.

Peugeot said in a recent report that the 3008 HYbrid4 will be manufactured in Sochaux and Mulhouse, France and is scheduled to be launched in Europe within the first half of 2011.
